What Is Clairsentience? A First-Person Guide

What is clairsentience?

Clairsentience means "clear feeling." It is the spiritual gift of receiving information through sensation: emotions, energy, and impressions that arrive in the body and carry knowledge about people, places, and situations. A clairsentient person feels what is true before anyone says it.

It is one of the "clairs," the family of psychic gifts named for the French word for "clear." The four best known are clairvoyance (clear seeing), clairaudience (clear hearing), claircognizance (clear knowing), and clairsentience (clear feeling). The list goes further, with clairalience (clear smelling), clairgustance (clear tasting), and clairtangency (clear touching), and traditions vary on how many they count. I experience all of them, and telepathy is my strongest channel, which is why I named my memoir for it. I am also a clairsentient empath, and clairsentience is the gift this post is about.

A note on where this stands: science has not confirmed clairsentience, and research into sensitivity and intuition is still developing. Everything here comes from lived experience, mine and that of the people I have worked with over many years.

How clairsentience feels

Clairsentience speaks through the body. It can arrive as:

  • A shift in your chest or stomach when someone walks into a room
  • A wave of emotion that has no source in your own life
  • Goosebumps, chills, or heat when something is true
  • A heaviness or lightness that settles in around certain people and places
  • A sudden knowing of how someone feels, with no words exchanged

Not long after I started working with someone new, my hips began to ache, and the tension traveled down through my knee and into my feet. One night I sat with it and asked my body directly whether the tension came from being around that person. The tightness released in that moment. My body had recognized something before my mind had found the words for it.

Clairsentience, empathy, and intuition

These three words overlap, and each describes something different:

  • Empathy is the human capacity to understand and share another person's feelings. Most people have it.
  • Intuition is an inner knowing that guides your own decisions. It speaks about your life.
  • Clairsentience is a spiritual gift of receiving information through sensation, often about other people, places, and events, with a clarity and intensity that goes well beyond everyday empathy.

An empath is someone who absorbs emotional and energetic information from the environment, and a clairsentient empath receives it as physical feeling. Clairsentience also connects to telepathy, the direct sensing of another person's inner world. I wrote about that in What Is Telepathy?, and about the full family of spiritual gifts in Telepathy, Intuition and Psychic Gifts: What's the Difference?.

Signs you may be clairsentient

You may be clairsentient if you:

  • Feel other people's emotions in your own body
  • Walk into a room and know the mood immediately
  • Pick up on what someone is hiding behind a smile
  • Feel drained after crowds, hospitals, or heavy conversations
  • Need real solitude to feel like yourself again
  • Have always been told you are "too sensitive"
  • Feel the weather, the seasons, or the energy of a place

If most of these sound familiar, read 10 Signs You're a Clairsentient Empath for a fuller list.

The part nobody tells you

Clairsentience arrives with a cost when no one teaches you how to use it. A child who feels everything in a household full of unspoken pain learns to absorb what was never hers to carry. In my life, this moved through generational trauma. For years I could not tell where my feelings ended and everyone else's began.

The work that followed was long: boundaries, grief, ego death, spiritual awakening, and the slow remembering of who the gift was meant to serve. That journey is the heart of my spiritual memoir, Telepathy Is My First Language.

How to work with clairsentience

1. Ask the sorting question. When a feeling lands in your body, ask: Is this mine? The question begins separating your inner world from everything you absorb.

2. Use water. For me, being submerged in a shower, a river, or the ocean brings clarity about what I am receiving and who it belongs to. Many empaths find water clears and resets the body.

3. Ground yourself. Place your feet on the earth, breathe slowly, and feel your weight. Grounding gives your nervous system a stable place to rest.

4. Protect your solitude. Quiet time restores a sensitive system. Treat it as maintenance and build it into your week.

5. Keep a feeling log. Write down what you sense and what happens. Over time you learn how your body speaks and which signals you can trust.

6. Claim your sovereignty. An empowered empath understands that the gift belongs to them and decides how, when, and with whom to use it. This is what I teach, and it changes everything about how clairsentience feels. I explore it in What Is an Empowered Empath?.

The moment I understood what clairsentience was, I realized I had been carrying the energy of a ridiculous number of people. I started releasing it immediately, through a practice I discovered that I explain in Book Two.

Clairsentience is a spiritual gift

Many people spend years believing their sensitivity is a flaw. I see it as a spiritual gift, a form of perception that, once understood, becomes a source of guidance, compassion, and clarity. Healing is the process that makes the gift legible, and it begins when you stop apologizing for what you feel.

If this resonated, my memoir Telepathy Is My First Language (Book One of Three) traces how the gift began, what it moved through, and the healing that made it legible. It is available now from Amazon, Apple Books, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble.
