What Is Telepathy? A First-Person Answer

What is telepathy?

Telepathy is the direct sensing of another person's thoughts, feelings, or state of being without words, facial expressions, or any other ordinary signal. People describe it as knowing who is calling before the phone rings, feeling a friend's grief from across a city, or hearing the answer to a question nobody has asked out loud.

A note on where this stands: science has not confirmed telepathy, and researchers continue to debate it. What follows comes from lived experience. I experience all of the psychic gifts, and telepathy is my strongest channel. It is the word I use for how information has moved through my life since childhood.

How telepathy reaches me

For me, telepathy arrives through visions and words. I see images that carry information about a person or a situation, and I can hear other people's thoughts. Nobody has to say a word. Clairsentience, the gift of clear feeling, works alongside it, and I explain that gift in What Is Clairsentience?.

The information does not always come from a person. I am closely attuned to the weather, and two years before it happened, I knew that two hurricanes would come back to back and wipe out the beaches where I lived. It arrived as a download, a complete knowing, right before an earlier hurricane that caused significant damage. When the storms came, they came back to back, just as I had known.

Other people receive telepathy as feeling or as a sudden inner knowing. Mine comes through visions and words.

Telepathy, intuition, and psychic gifts

These words overlap, and each points to a different part of the experience:

  • Intuition is a quiet inner knowing that guides your own choices. It speaks about your life.
  • Telepathy is information that comes from another person's inner world. It speaks about someone else.
  • Psychic gifts is the umbrella term for abilities such as clairsentience (feeling), clairvoyance (seeing), and clairaudience (hearing).

Telepathy sits inside that family of spiritual gifts, and many empaths experience all three at different times. I go deeper on the differences in Telepathy, Intuition and Psychic Gifts: What's the Difference?.

Why telepathy was my first language

I named my memoir Telepathy Is My First Language because this was how I understood the world before I had words for it. As a child, I knew what the adults around me felt and thought, including the things they were not saying. That kind of sensitivity moves through families. In my case, it moved through generational trauma, and a child who feels everything inside a household full of unspoken pain learns to carry what was never hers.

For years, I had no name for what was happening. I only knew that I heard too much, saw too much, knew too much, and could not switch it off.

The cost of an open channel

A gift without understanding can wear a person down. Absorbing other people's emotions, losing track of where my feelings ended and theirs began, and carrying grief that belonged to others shaped decades of my life. The work that followed was long and expensive: boundaries, somatic practices, grieving, ego death, and the slow remembering of who the gift was meant to serve.

That arc is the spine of my memoir. It moves through generational trauma, pregnancy loss, ego death, and spiritual awakening, and it ends with a gift I can finally read clearly, which is the real meaning of healing for me.

If you recognize this in yourself

You may be telepathic or clairsentient if you often:

  • Hear words that turn out to be someone else's thoughts
  • See images or visions that carry information about people or situations
  • Know things about people you have no reason to know
  • Feel other people's emotions in your own body
  • Sense shifts in a room before anyone speaks
  • Need long stretches of solitude to feel like yourself again
  • Have always been called "too sensitive"

Start with grounding. Place your feet on the floor, breathe slowly, and ask yourself: Is this feeling mine? That one question begins to separate your inner world from everything you absorb. I explain more in What Is Clairsentience? and 10 Signs You're a Clairsentient Empath.

The practice that helps me most is water. Being submerged in a shower, a river, or the ocean brings clarity about what I am receiving and who it belongs to.

If this resonated, my spiritual memoir Telepathy Is My First Language (Book One of Three) tells the full story of how the gift began, what it moved through, and the healing that made it legible. It is available now from Amazon, Apple Books, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble.
